Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Injections

Targeted treatment for knee osteoarthritis and joint pain

Offered at Dr. Barsoom Pain & Migraine Practice

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injections are used to reduce pain and improve mobility in patients with osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee.

Although HA can be used in other joints, it is most commonly administered for knee osteoarthritis at our clinic.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in joint fluid. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber within the joint.

In osteoarthritis, the quality and concentration of hyaluronic acid decrease. This contributes to:

• Joint stiffness
• Reduced shock absorption
• Pain with movement
• Inflammation

HA injections aim to restore lubrication within the joint and improve function.

When Are HA Injections Recommended?

Treatment typically follows a stepwise approach:

• Initial management
• Activity modification
• Physiotherapy
• Weight optimization
• Oral pain medications
• If symptoms persist
• Corticosteroid (cortisone) injection may be considered to reduce inflammation
• If pain continues or returns
• Hyaluronic Acid injection
• In selected cases, a combination approach may be used

Dr. Barsoom determines the appropriate sequence based on severity, imaging findings, and patient goals.

HA Products Used at Our Clinic

At Dr. Barsoom Pain & Migraine Practice, we commonly use several hyaluronic acid formulations available in Canada such as Neovisc®. Neovisc® is a high-quality hyaluronic acid product designed to improve joint lubrication and reduce knee pain associated with osteoarthritis.

Suitability is determined during consultation.

What to Expect

• Performed in-office
• Typically completed in a single visit
• Minimal downtime
• Gradual improvement over several weeks
• Effects may last several months

Response varies depending on severity of arthritis and individual factors.

Is HA Covered by OHIP?

Hyaluronic acid injections are not covered by OHIP. However, many private insurance plans cover the cost of the medication. Coverage varies depending on your specific plan.

Who May Benefit?

HA injections may be appropriate for patients who:

• Have mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis
• Have not achieved sufficient relief from physiotherapy and medications
• Wish to delay joint replacement surgery
• Prefer a non-surgical treatment approach

Next Steps

If knee pain continues to interfere with walking, climbing stairs, or daily activity, consultation can help determine whether HA injection, corticosteroid injection, PRP, or other therapies may be appropriate.
