Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT)
Targeted treatment for nerve-related pain
Offered at Dr. Barsoom Pain & Migraine Practice
Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT) is a minimally invasive treatment designed to reduce irritation of superficial peripheral nerves that contribute to chronic pain.
It is often considered when pain persists despite physiotherapy, medications, or rest.

What is Perineural Injection Therapy?
Perineural Injection Therapy involves injecting a small volume of a low-concentration 5% dextrose (sugar) solution just under the skin near superficial irritated nerve to treat pain.
These nerves can become inflamed or hypersensitive after:
• Repetitive strain injuries
• Sports injuries
• Chronic tendon degeneration
• Nerve entrapment
• Post-injury pain
The goal is to calm nerve irritation and reduce pain signaling.
How Does PIT Work?
Superficial nerves can become sensitized and continuously send pain signals, even after the original injury has healed.
Perineural injections are thought to:
• Reduce local nerve inflammation
• Improve nerve blood flow
• Decrease hypersensitivity
• Interrupt chronic pain signaling pathways
Treatment targets specific areas identified during examination.
Conditions That May Benefit
Perineural Injection Therapy may be considered for:
• Tennis elbow
• Golfer’s elbow
• Chronic shoulder pain
• Chronic ankle pain
• Plantar fasciitis
• Carpal tunnel-related pain
• Post-injury nerve irritation
• Certain chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions
Suitability is determined during assessment.
What to Expect
• Performed in-office
• Very fine needle injections just under the skin
• Minimal downtime
• Typically performed as a series of treatments
• Gradual improvement over time
The number of sessions varies depending on condition severity and duration.
Is PIT Covered by OHIP?
Perineural Injection Therapy is not covered by OHIP. Coverage by private insurance plans varies and may depend on your individual policy.
How PIT Differs from Other Injection Therapies
• Corticosteroid injections aim to reduce inflammation inside joints.
• Hyaluronic Acid injections improve joint lubrication.
• PRP supports tissue healing using concentrated platelets.
• Perineural Injection Therapy focuses specifically on calming irritated superficial nerves.
Your treatment plan may include one or more of these approaches depending on diagnosis.
When Should You Consider PIT?
You may benefit from consultation if:
• Pain persists beyond several weeks
• Imaging does not fully explain the level of discomfort
• Symptoms feel burning, sensitive, or nerve-related
• Standard therapies have not provided sufficient relief
